From Seyssel in Savoie, Fance (northeastern Rhone), the foothills of the French Alps, about an hour’s drive from Geneva, Switzerland, with roots in winemaking dating back to the 11th century. Produced by Lambert de Seyssel and Oliver Verichon, who have been producing sparkling wine for over 100 years.
The wine is 60% Molette and 40% Altesse, varietals unique to the region, grown biodynamically on clay and limestone soils. Molette contributes crisp acidity, with earthy aromas, while Altesse brings exotic aromas, freshness, with floral, nutty, and herbal notes.
Notes of alpine flowers, green grape, green apple, dried apricot, strawberry jam, Belgian candy sugar, and lemon, with a structure of yeasty/bready notes. Full in the mouth, with a plush, mousy, lingering carbonation. This wine isn’t bone dry and doesn’t just “evaporate” after having a sip.
Produced in the traditional Champagne method and aged on lees 2 years. Easily one of the best sparkling wines I’ve had outside of Champagne, and better than many Champagnes I’ve had. And for under $25, it’s an enthusiastic Yes! With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, this would be a perfect bottle to pop, especially paired with some cheese, crackers, charcuterie, and of course, love.
