High-proof single barrels from Brown-Forman’s Old Forester label are a favorite among Mission Staff and customers – which is why we’re always excited when given the opportunity to take a barrel and see how the differences in warehouses and floors made a difference.
Back around Christmas, we landed in Warehouse J – known for producing some of the most fruit-forward barrels from Old Forester – and it’s a different animal from our last pick. Where higher floor barrels benefit from intense heat and temperature swings, floor 3 sits in a sweet spot: enough elevation to concentrate the spirit and push the proof, but with a little more balance and less aggression. The result is a 129-proof cask strength bourbon that’s powerful without being relentless.
The nose opens with coffee, cinnamon, and toffee, with the palate delivering generous tart fruit, dark cherry, and clove with a wood-spice finish that lingers. An ice cube does wonders on a hot day like today, and you feel the bourbon transform – maple syrup and tobacco emerge on the nose, while the palate softens into crème brulee, peanut brittle, and vanilla. A long, easy, sweet finish worth savoring.
