We tasted this wine recently and the team was blown away by the price to quality ratio. A few months back we featured the Mazzei Chianti Classico in our weekly staff picks and that turned out to be one of our bestsellers during the summer. We tried the 2017 Villa Trasqua and this tops it and at $30 a bottle wow.
Gran Selezione, a new type of Chianti Classico, was introduced in 2014. For the first time under Italian wine legislation, a new type of wine has been established at the top of the qualitative pyramid of a denomination. Produced exclusively from the winery’s own grapes, Gran Selezione represents the maximum degree of excellence as an expression of the terroir of each estate.
Just in time for the fall season this bottle is paired perfectly with all sorts of cuisine such as hearty pasta dishes, stews, or a grilled T-bone steak. This 100% Sangiovese is in such a great drinking window for the 2017 vintage. Textbook sour cherry, leather and spices fresh acidity with firm but smooth tannins. A Fall Classic for sure.
